WoodSolutions Campus Modules
Covering topics from decks to retaining walls, renovations to recreational spaces, the courses are designed for uses from builders to merchants to DIYers. Practical and comprehensive, the cover the entirety of the building with timber process, from legislation and standards, to design and installation, giving users hands-on help at every stage of the job.
The video-based modules cover a wide range of topics, from introductory areas to more advances subjects.
Timber and Wood Products
Many types of timber and wood products can be recovered from trees. In a well-balanced industry, everything from the log can be used in some way. This topic provides an overview of the types of products available, their manufacture and major applications areas, the generally available sizes and the major standards controlling their manufacture or use.
Timber and Wood Properties
This topic introduces you to things you need to know about timber and wood properties.
The topic contents explain:
- The types of wood - this covers the character of the material found in the stem of the tree and recovered to form the resources of timber products
- Wood’s structural and visual characteristics
- Properties that influence other applications - this affects how timber performs in different applications, properies include; density, hardness and fire resistance
Completing the learning resources in this topic can help you understand: the different types of wood used in products and how it can change between parts of the stem and between species; the way that wood’s character can influence the material’s strength and visual appeal; and key aspects of the material that influence its performance in building design and a range of other applications.
Timber Grades and Grading
This topic describes the need to grade naturally variable wood products into groups with similar structural, visual or other properties and characteristics suitable for specific applications. Major grading methods are described and the grade terms used in the marketplace explained.
Environmental characteristics of timber
This topic introduces timber and wood products’ environmental characteristics, describes their potential contribution to sustainable development and compares them with those of major materials. As forestry practise can have significant impacts on the forest’s renewability and other impacts, the benefits and limits of forest and chain-of-custody certification are discussed.
Selecting fit-for-purpose timber for applications
This topic introduces the requirement for timber suppliers to provide customers with products that are fit for their intended purpose. It provides an overview of Australian consumer law, describes means of determining an application’s performance requirements, and outlines product considerations for common situations.
Timber inspection
As all structural applications in building are regulated, the design and installation of these timber-rich solutions have to comply with the relevant regulations and Australian standards. AS1684 Residential Timber-framed Construction is a key reference document but other Australian standards also influence practice. This course includes these standards before going through the other aspects important to inspecting and certifying timber for house construction.
Introduction to Building Regulations and Standards
This topic introduces a major influence on building design and material use: building regulations and standards. It explains how they are structured and how standards compliance and regulations are linked. It also provides an overview of key timber production standards and the National Construction Code (the NCC).
